Version ofthe minimalist podcast we are here atthe Neptune theatre and beautifulSeattleahthat is so great so we’re doing what wedo three long winded questions actuallylong winded answersthere’ll be normal questions I’m surebut our our answers will will bemonitoring and in some fashionand then we’ll move on to a Funny Presidential Election Map The Blue Wave 2020 shirt lightninground we’ve been doing the lightninground a little bit differently we have arap battle on stage but without therapping but it’s a bit of a contestbetween this to see who can who can putout the biggest maxims and we’re goingto go ahead and start going to give usyour name and where you’re from and whatyour question is hi there my name is UniI’m from Issaquah Washington and I’vebeen one of your fans for about sixmonths okayand I am one of those obnoxiouscorporate America success folks I’m adirector of operationsjust like you Josh my question for youis after you have found a success thatyou have found what has changed in yourexperience as a minimalist because Ifeel that I’ve adopted a lot of thethings. Them up online and eventuallyover time we we wrote a book and then wewrote a second book called everythingthat remains and and and throughout thatjourney we continued to add on to thefoundation we build and so since theinception we’ve we’ve written hundredsof essays about minimalism but we alsostarted this podcast we’ve contributedin a bunch of different ways we’vetoured all over the place and we evenjust put out a documentary recently butthe key for us has been to focus on onething at a time and for us it’s onething a year we tend to pick one majorproject a year and then all of ourefforts need to coordinate to tocontribute to that one focus for theyear and so I’ll give you a few examplesreal quick as we look toward the horizonit’s always a year ahead for us so backin in 2013 Ryan and I started apublishing company with our friend ColinWright called asymmetrical press andthat publishing company was to reallyjust publish our own print books andebooks and audiobooks and Collins aswell and then we also have helped. I’ll give you averb answer I’m really passionate aboutwriting is what I’ll tell people in factthat’s how I I dislocated myself fromthe need to tie myself to the the jobtitle and being able to talk about whatI was passionate about and then thatallowed you to have a whole conversationabout oh yeah passion about snowboardingwhat are you passionate about and sowe’re talking today about passion pleasethink about it and in other terms thatyou may feel more comfortable with ifyou feel great with passion then greatif it’s better with creativity or what’syour craft or what do you enjoysometimes it’s what are your hobbiesthat’s fine you get the frame andhowever you want I know when people askMariah that question she’s just like ohwell you know I able at thisyou know I ear nose and throat doctorsoffice but like every time she get askedask that every time she gets asked thatquestion I can just see this look overher face like okay let’s get this out ofthe way so we can talk about somethingelse because she doesn’t want to talkabout

And she was like going I wantthe the surgery room and I’m like okayyeah she wants to be a Funny Presidential Election Map The Blue Wave 2020 shirt doctor she’s likeI want a serial killer what I want themorgue next question is from Connor thisis a different Connor howdy this is kindof with a no the previous Connor wasConnor with an A mmm Connor asks how doyou find happiness when your stress thisis from Connor boy man happiness is notthe point yeah it’s a misnomer I feellike because I mean it’s written in theConstitution or any like everyone hasthe right to pursue happiness suit ofhappiness not the right to happinessyeah it’s uh got it that the pursuit ofhappinesscan be I don’t know it can be adeflating goal because like because Ifeel like in the corporate world I wascontinuously chasing happiness sure andI would get a new car or I go on avacation or you know I’d buy you knowI’d upgrade my my computer or whateverit is upgrade my TV I was kind ofchasing that happiness but the more Ichased it the further away I got from ityeahso the for me when I’m stressed it’s notabout. Interested in your take on howminimalism can be brought to an agingpopulation so we don’t leave our kidswith a horrible legacy of too much stuffwell thank you great questionso we touched on a little bit in thefilm in 2008 my mother moved to toFlorida to finally retire because that’swhat you do when you live in Ohio or NewYork you move to Florida and a fewmonths after she moved down there shefound out she had lung cancer and Ispent a lot of time with her that yearshe was going through chemo andradiation and when she passed I Irealized I needed to make one last tripdown to down to Florida and this time itwas to deal with her stuff so I flewfrom Dayton Ohio down the st Pete BeachFlorida and and when I arrived I got toMom’s tiny one bedroom apartment I foundabout three apartments worth of stuffcrammed into that tiny one bedroomapartment now she wasn’t a hoarder therewere no teeth in her freezer but sheowned a lot of stuff right she had 65years worth of accumulations walked intoher living room it was stuffed with bigantique furniture. Really what I’mattempting to do with everything we dowith the minimalists is how do we addvalue to other people’s lives and I knowthat that phrase has stuck with me overthe years and so much so that it hasbecome a visceral sort of emotionalresponse to things is this adding valueto other people’s lives and does it addvalue to my life as well and I can’tkeep giving without getting as well sowe have we have to have both there butwhen she asked that question it that wasthe most honest way to actually ask whatdo you do yeah because that’s that’s theintention behind the question so whatyou what you talked about he said I lovesnowboarding or I’m passionate aboutsnowboarding I call that turning a verbI’m sorry turning a noun into a verb soinstead of talking about what you do toearn a living we all have to make apaycheck I totally understand that weall have bills but it may not may or maynot be the thing we’re passionate aboutand so I found that I instead of sayinghere’s my title here’s my noun buthere’s my now and answer
